What is a sales commission plan?
A sales commission plan explains how eligible sales turn into variable pay and how those results are reviewed.

The core parts of a plan
- Eligibility for roles, products, deals, or actions
- Rates, flat fees, tiers, and thresholds
- Quota, period, timing, and attainment rules
- Splits, draws, bonuses, clawbacks, and role changes
- Approval ownership, effective dates, and change history
Clarity matters as much as motivation
A motivating plan is still operational only when a rep and reviewer can determine which rule applies. Define ambiguous words such as booked, collected, eligible, approved, and payable.
Turn the plan into an operating rule
Keep the plan version attached to each result. That lets a manager explain a payout months later even after rates, territories, or roles have changed.
